Jack Perkins – Words and Music

Motorway Day

Filed under: Poetry — jacksperkins @ 3:48 am

Each morning the motorway’s
prostate enlarges
as Wellington’s vehicular
bladder discharges
straining, slowly, painfully draining
onto Lambton Quay and the CBD.
Sumped in smelly septic tanks
of multi-storeyed concrete banks.

Late afternoon brings tired exodus
exhausting re-run in reverse
and the rain is getting worse.

Windscreen smeary
vision bleary
drivers fidget
tempers fugit.
